When is the best time to travel to Mongolia?

The best time to travel to Mongolia is generally between mid-April and October. The Gobi Desert is the first region that can be easily visited in spring from mid-April. It gets very hot in the Gobi in July and August and we therefore recommend traveling to the region between April and June or September to October.  It is particularly beautiful in spring to see the numerous newborn animals. Foals, baby camels, kids and small yaks run around everywhere, welcoming the summer.

In the summer months, central Mongolia and especially Lake Khuvsgul in the north is a great destination. The Naadam national festival takes place in every province in mid-July and we strongly recommend visiting this spectacle in the countryside and avoiding Ulan Bator. There, the horse racing, wrestling and archery are still idyllic and less crowded.
In the fall, a trip across Mongolia to the Altai Mountains is worthwhile, as this is when the eagle hunters become active again.

Packing list for a trip to Mongolia

Temperatures can fluctuate due to the continental climate. During the day, the sun is strong and it warms up quickly. In the evening it usually cools down and you will feel the wind of the steppe. It is therefore advisable to pack clothing for warm and cold temperatures. In the Gobi it usually stays very warm at night in the summer months and a thin sleeping bag is sufficient. In the rest of the country, a warmer sleeping bag is recommended and is especially important in spring and fall.

It rains little and the sky is usually not overcast in the “land of blue skies”. Sunscreen and sunglasses are therefore also very important.

Catering during the Mongolia trip

Mongolian cuisine is primarily meat and dough-heavy (you can find more information about Mongolian food in our blog) and you will find a restaurant offering buzz, khushuur and a meat dish in almost every small village. There are also small supermarkets with the basics everywhere. Provincial capitals such as Dalanzadgad in the Gobi, Darkhan and Erdenkt in the north also have large supermarkets with many German products.
It therefore makes the most sense to take provisions for about 3 to 5 days from Ulan Bator and then buy more on the way.

In Ulan Bator, the new Emart (a Korean hypermarket chain) is a good “one stop store”. There you can find everything you need for a road trip. For glamping and gourmet lovers, the Rosewood Restaurant with the Rosewood Market and Butchery on Soul Street is a great address. Here you will find freshly baked burgers and sourdough bread (which lasts longer) as well as a large selection of barbecue products. Our tip is to take the shrink-wrapped and frozen home-made products, which can then be eaten fresh even after several days.
The camping set includes a gas stove. You should always have enough LPG 500ml gas bottles with you.  These can be found in most supermarkets.

Navigation and refueling during the Mongolia trip

Navigation in Mongolia works best with a smartphone and the maps.me app. Download the app with the Mongolia map to your cell phone free of charge in advance and also buy a local SIM card from Unitel, Gmobile or Mobicom. The app is great for navigating without knowing Cyrillic and without an internet connection. Make sure you don't underestimate the distances and travel times. Off the beaten track. On asphalt roads you usually drive 40-80kmh and should not rush and also not drive after dusk due to the many animals and difficult navigation.

Mongolia is the most sparsely populated country in the world and at the same time has an amazingly dense network of petrol stations. Every small settlement has at least one petrol station and there are petrol stations at regular intervals along the main roads. It is advisable to always fill up when the tank is 2/3 full and to visit more frequented filling stations with better fuel and to use additives at regular intervals (for petrol cars LIQUI MOLY Octane Plus for a higher octane number and more power as well as the Injection Cleaner against corrosion, bacteria and water in the fuel for diesel vehicles the LIQUI MOLY Super Diesel Additive for more fuel, power and against corrosion, bacteria and water). Roadside assistance

If you get into an accident or damage the vehicle, please contact your rental company immediately. The car rental company will help you immediately and send a mechanic or replacement car if necessary.
