Ergeliin Zoo Nature Reserve is located in Khatanbulag soum of Dornogovi province and it covers 59,840 hectare land. This area is rich with archeological findings and there have been fossils of mammals, fish, turtle and lizard from 30 million years ago discovered around here. The first discoveries were found by Roy Chapman Andrews, an American scientist, in 1992 and the area has become state protected in 1996. Today, the findings from Ergeliin Zoo Nature Reserve are put on display in museums all around the world as well as in Mongolian Natural History Museum. Scientists wrote about 50 research materials based on Ergeliin Zoo and in those scientific works the nature reserve is often called “The Golden Mountain”.
