Bulgan River flows through an area between Bulgan soum of Khovd province and Bulgan soum of Bayan-Ulgii province. The river is an important place to preserve beaver population and it has become a state protected nature reserve in 1995. Beside the beaver, fauna includes rare species such as sable, beech marten, argali sheep, ibex, onager, black-tailed gazelle, snow leopard, lynx, Pallas’s cat, wolf, fox and native lizard called Laudakia stoliczkana. Also, fishes such as perch, carp and bream can be found in the river. As for the flora, there is not much variety as the area is a part of the Gobi desert but Bulgan River valley is one of the few places in Mongolia that still has wild sea buckthorns.
